Anyone who has graced a rose bush knows intimately both its beauty and its thorns. To me, roses stand as quiet but powerful visual reminders that beauty ultimately triumphs over evil. Fruitful, vibrant growth often comes from our most painful seasons, whether facing evil within or without. No where else is good's triumph over evil more striking than on the cross at calvary, where Jesus wore a crown of thorns, giving himself up for those He loves. The spotless Lamb, the Holy One, painfully adorned with the Bible's visual motif representing evil and judgment. "He who knew no sin became sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God."

As ones redeemed on that day, we too overcome evil with good, in His power. May we take courage, quietly overcoming evil with good as we abide in and blossom on the Vine-- the One who has already overcome and will overcome evil.
